Opposable Planets » Old Spice Still Smells like Old Advertising

So it goes with the social media land grab currently underway as every major corporation rushes to stake a claim on our attention and our loyalty.   They are co-opting a medium whose fundamental and radical proposition is a promotion of interpersonal connection, many-to-many communication, and the privilege of social norms over business norms.

Found via @euan. A few people I know have raved about this advert, but for me there was still something uncomfortable about it. I think this blog post from Opposable Planets may have nailed it.

Charles Leadbeater and the open web

Emerging media powers such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Google [are competing] to fence off a digital landscape that is only just coming into view for most of us.

This captures quite well a nagging feeling I have about where the web is going. Particularly sad for me is the "just coming into view for most of us" part, which implies the loss of the open web to the mainstream experience.

During a social media workshop with a client today a question was asked about the IP of content you submit. I wasn't too happy with the answer we gave so did some research on some popular services, a summary of which I've put into a Google Docs spreadsheet below.

An important thing to bear in mind, which is common to pretty much all these services, is that you will retain the ownership but the services will grant themselves a wide-ranging licence and often sub-licences. These kind of licences are absolutely necessary though if the services are to do their job of sharing content with other users.

See the spreadsheet in Google Docs or view it below:

During my research I found these other useful resources:
